Thinking about Dating or Marrying a White Person? Read this first.
I’ve been married to a white person for 10 years. I know a thing or two about how they can be. (Save your condolences at least until after you finish reading this piece — but then by all means send them if you would like.)
Despite your best efforts, you may find yourself encumbered with the prospect of dating, living with or even marrying a white person.
It may not be your fault, and this is outside the scope of my main focus today, but it may also be your fault. Maybe you didn’t cultivate a personality that would resonate with anyone a shade darker than a winter’s moonlight. Maybe you don’t mind the smell of wet dog. Maybe you’re so painfully patronizing that POC don’t trust you.
I know, because I’ve been there. Despite my entreaties to date a non-white person, I was forced to date and pen-ultimately marry and ultimately stay married to a white person for ten whole years.
In my experience, white persons will think they’re doing you a favor by dating them — even if they’re in literally the last group of people you wanted to date. White people hate not being first, so maybe keep that tidbit to yourself. You…
