The way to prosper good ideas is not by deleting bad ones. Good ideas emerge as a function of their goodness, and their prima facie superior alignment with facts, truth and usefulness.
Censorship by Facebook as a government/intelligence agent is basically identical to government censorship. If Facebook wants to be independent of the state, I support that move, but once it became an entrenched business, it almost immediately turned to the state to secure itself more firmly. Zuck practically begged Congress to help him maintain hegemony by foisting itself into social media business.
I’m of the opinion that Facebook’s primary problem isn’t its already Big Brotherish tendency to quell any dissent at the behest of governments, but that it’s ultimately an unhealthy development for human development and mental health.
And that’s all on purpose. Facebook is populated by genius-level human behavior experts and Ivy League coders who have the singular goal of increasing online engagement. That engagement is made possible only by a Machiavellian/casino approach which needs to split people up into groups and to pit themselves against each other.
No one engages in a 500 comment conversation about how nice someone’s niece looks on Easter. People are positioned to tear each other apart in an online gladiator contest. Facebook prospers by formulating algorithms that bring gladiators together into their arena. The ultimate goal is not human interconnectedness, it’s controversy, and adversary skewing towards infinite engagement, which is synonymous with ad revenue.
I’m appalled by Facebook’s entire business model. Its state-sponsored narrative management is just another carbuncle on this anus of a venture.
