It's generally true which makes it strange for Chris to assert that Joel made a "fact-free" comment about black fatherhood.

The thing about this statistic is that its effects are color blind. ALL children raised in single family homes suffer worse outcomes on average than children raise in 2 parent homes. That's not remotely up for debate. It's one of the key pillars of building generational wealth, stability, and prosperity. The fact that black families are so frequently run by single parents is key to understanding the outcomes. Ignoring this fact does black people a great disservice in multiple ways: first it obscures a major cause of poverty and lack of opportunity, and second, it infantilizes black people by pretending like they don't have any agency in their own success.

I frequently see this kind of patronizing "they don't know any better" tone from rich white liberals, but also from poor white conservatives. Either way, acting like a whole race of people is incapable in some way is the definition of racism. The only difference between the rich white liberal and the poor white conservative is that the liberal thinks (and will frequently brag) that their racism is helpful and just.
