In investing, I’ve noticed plenty of examples of Silicon-creep, especially in startups, but it has infected almost every market. Plenty of companies now claim that they’re “changing the world” with their products. Way too many companies now market themselves as selling “something” as a service. Those are my two red flags. If an otherwise ordinary company with a normal, real world product starts sniffing their own farts and telling me that they’re changing the world or that their garden variety widget is now actually a service, then I’m looking for a way to short them. Peloton is on my list, as is every single one of those fancy food delivery companies.
