I wrote a response here on medium a couple weeks ago but for some reason it has basically zero interactions despite my usual efforts to disseminate it. You can find it if you’re interested.
My main point: the ad and your piece both contain a central and fatal flaw. Synecdoche. Confusing or conflating the whole with the part, or the part with the whole.
Judging and stereotyping "men" based on the actions of the marginal few is a bullshit tactic. It works and you can get away with it according to what’s fashionable.
Don’t try it when you’re talking about muslims or gays or blacks or women. You’ll (rightly) be called islamophobic, homophobic, racist or sexist if you paint members of those demographic groups according to the worst stereotypes you can muster.
Are there card carrying members of those groups who engage in heinous acts that fit within a rare but noticeable trend of behavior within those groups? Yes.
Is it fruitful to casually blame all members and link them with that behavior? All Muslims really need to stop suicide attacks, especially the condescendingly quoted “good" muslims. Right?
